L'Almanarre / Hyères windsurf & kitesurf spot

L'Almanarre at Hyères is probably the best-known kitesurf spot of the French Mediterranean and a historic windsurf venue – it has hosted funboard world championships, the Grand Prix de l'Almanarre and several world cups in windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing. Its secret is geography: the Giens peninsula is linked to the mainland by two sand spits (tombolos). The western tombolo, along the Route du Sel and the salt pans, faces the Mistral; the eastern side (La Bergerie, La Madrague) faces the easterlies. Two seas, two moods, one place – which is why there is almost always a side that works.

At L'Almanarre itself the key is simple: in W/NW (Mistral) the spot is onshore, with waves and quickly messy water – powerful, "battlefield" conditions for experienced riders; in easterly wind the water is flat but offshore. The honest flip side: the spot is very crowded; in summer kiting is limited to a small zone between beach accesses 16 and 21 with a mandatory exit channel; the city of Hyères has issued safety reminders after several incidents on 30-knot summer days; it sits in a Natura 2000 reserve with flamingos; and the Mistral is strong and irregular.

How the spot works

Two sides of the peninsula:

Kite zones (rules): Kiting is forbidden in the 300 m strip from the beach except in marked zones. In summer (15 June – 15 September per a kite spot database) launching is limited to the zone between accesses ("portes") 16 and 21 on the Route du Sel, with a mandatory exit channel (called "porte 19" by regulars); an older source gives April–October for the delimited zone. A marshal checks that safety rules are followed in summer.

Crowds and incidents: The city of Hyères published a reminder of good practice after several incidents on days with sustained 30 kn wind; saturation of the dedicated zone is identified as the main factor.

Coordinates: The supplied coordinates (43.12038, 6.12857) lie in the L'Almanarre area.

No tides: Mediterranean – tides play no practical role (not verified numerically).
