France
Wimereux is a seaside resort on the Côte d'Opale, about 5–7 km north of Boulogne-sur-Mer and some 20 km south of Wissant. Like Wissant, it is very popular with kiters and windsurfers from northern France, Belgium and Germany: the wind is strong – one spot guide describes it as typically 5–10 kn stronger than at neighbouring spots – and the waves can be huge. Riders launch from the beach in front of the sea wall; just north of town lies the Pointe aux Oies, which a local school ranks with Wissant as the best kite spot of the region in terms of wind orientation and safety.
According to PWA wave rider Jules Denel, Wimereux is the spot that picks up the most swell: there are generally more waves than at Wissant, though they are slower and softer – in small south/south-westerly conditions you can quickly get a metre of waves while Wissant is flat. The honest flip side: Wimereux is completely tide-dependent – rideable only around low tide (roughly ±3 hours), because at high tide the sea covers the beach and the waves break onto the sea wall; there are rocks and riprap at low tide, strong tidal currents, and in July and August kitesurfing is banned before 19:00.
Low tide only: At low and mid tide a large sandy beach opens up for good sessions; at high tide the sea covers the beach and creates a dangerous shorebreak – practicable only around low tide ±3 hours. At high tide on big coefficients, inexperienced riders should not go out. At low tide you have to go further out to reach the waves, which lets you approach them with good speed.
Sea wall: At high tide the waves break against the sea wall – especially dangerous in W to SW wind.
Summer rule: In July and August, kitesurfing is forbidden before 19:00; the alternative is La Rochette, further south.
Pointe aux Oies: Just north of Wimereux towards Ambleteuse, a wild site with dunes, cliffs and a rocky foreshore; remains of a submerged forest (tree trunks and peat) are visible at low tide. Rated by a local school as one of the best and safest kite spots of the region; for surfing it is described as a reef break, with rocks that can make sessions perilous depending on the tide.
Coordinates: The supplied coordinates (50.76963, 1.61139) lie at Wimereux.
Sources broadly agree that SW is the dominant and best direction; descriptions of the angle vary (side-onshore vs. side/side-off).
| Wind direction | Relation to beach | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| S | Side / side-off (per a kite guide) | ✅ Nicest waves; a pro uses S/SW in small conditions |
| SW | Side-onshore (most sources) | ✅ Dominant and best direction |
| W | Onshore – waves can get very big | ✅ Experts, jumps; dangerous at high tide |
| NW | Onshore | ✅ Calmer water, freeride |

Koordinaten: Die angegebenen Koordinaten (50.76963, 1.61139) liegen in Wimereux.

| NW | Auflandig | ✅ Ruhigeres Wasser, Freeride |
