La Gracieuse / Carteau windsurf & kitesurf spot

Carteau and La Gracieuse are the two flat-water jewels of Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, at the gateway to the Camargue and the western edge of the Gulf of Fos. The Anse de Carteau is a semi-closed bay with ultra-flat, shallow water – standing depth over long distances – and an official kite zone with a big lawn for rigging. Across the bay, La Gracieuse (the "They de la Gracieuse") is a 6 km sand spit in the west of the Gulf of Fos, a classified nature reserve reachable only by boat or on foot from Plage Napoléon, where schools teach on flat water with standing depth for hundreds of metres.

Both spots sit between the Camargue nature park and the tall chimneys of the Fos port and industrial zone, and both are shaped by the Mistral – often very strong, with slaps of 30–40 kn and more at Carteau. They are among the best places in the region to learn, progress, ride freestyle or long distance on flat water. The honest flip side: a navigation channel crosses Carteau bay, there are mussel parks and forbidden shallow zones, a detailed municipal decree with seasonal and hunting closures, a 2.50 m height barrier at the Carteau car park, and in summer Carteau is packed with kiters from all over Europe.

How the spot works

Carteau (Anse de Carteau): A semi-closed bay at Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, essentially a kite spot. Ultra-flat, shallow water where you can stand over large distances – ideal for progressing, freestyle or long distance. According to one spot guide, you can ride in all wind directions here without the risk of ending up on the open sea; another describes the bay as open to the north. Best flat conditions in SE (onshore); works in Mistral N/NW, but side-off and more irregular – for the Mistral, Plage Napoléon is often the better choice. Parking and launch area are marked by wooden posts. Reachable from Plage Napoléon by kite or on foot (path along the beach, behind the dune, to the fishermen's huts).

La Gracieuse: A 6 km sand spit in the west of the Gulf of Fos, classified as a nature reserve and reachable by boat or on foot from Plage Napoléon. A local school describes the spot as a deserted, safe sandy beach exposed to all wind directions, with more regular wind than on the seafront, flat water and standing depth over hundreds of metres. The Mistral blows from N or NE here, sometimes strong and often gusty. Sand yachts are banned on La Gracieuse from mid-June to mid-September to protect nesting birds.

Municipal decree no. 2015/982 (Carteau): Regulates windsurf and kitesurf in the 300 m strip of the Carteau sector.

Other restrictions: Riding is forbidden in the mussel parks and the shallow areas on the south side along the road to Plage Napoléon.

No tides: Mediterranean – tides play no practical role (not verified numerically).
