L'Espiguette windsurf & kitesurf spot

L'Espiguette, at Le Grau-du-Roi on the Gard coast of Occitanie, is one of the largest beaches in the region: around 10 km of endless sand at the western edge of the Camargue, with a 360° horizon. It is the official kite spot of Le Grau-du-Roi / Port Camargue, with an immense area for rigging, launching and landing and shallow water over a good distance – which is why many schools (Club 30 Kite, Hibiskite, UCPA, Monki and others) use it as their teaching spot. The local tourist office proudly notes that kitesurfing was developed on the beaches of Occitanie in the mid-1990s.

The spot works in almost all wind directions from NNW to SSE: the tramontane (NW) in winter and early spring, and a thermal SW sea breeze from May through the summer. The honest caveats: it is a 15–20 minute walk (about 500–600 m through sand) from the car park to the kite zone; in strong tramontane the water becomes technical with big waves; the summer thermal can suddenly turn offshore; in summer the spot is very busy with schools, boats and holidaymakers; and there is a slight current along the shore.

How the spot works

Access: From Le Grau-du-Roi take the Route de l'Espiguette (D255) to the Camping de l'Espiguette sign. From Nîmes: A9 exit Gallargues, then D979 towards Le Grau-du-Roi / Port Camargue. The launch area is marked by a sign "zone reserved for traction sports" (with a small spelling mistake that regulars like to joke about). Allow around 15–20 minutes on foot from the car park – choose your gear before setting off. Several schools reach the spot by boat.

Zones: Riding is possible all year. In summer a supervised bathing zone of 500 m along the beach is separated from the kite zone by yellow buoys – do not cross it. The spot is heavily used by schools – keep away from their students.

Water: Shallow over a good distance; slightly choppy, not really suited to kite freestyle. In strong tramontane, big waves and very technical conditions.

Sandbank at the point: Opposite Plage Sud lies the Espiguette sand spit ("Flèche sableuse de l'Espiguette"), a tongue of sand formed by currents, used by a school as a flat-water spot in W to SE winds.

No tides: Mediterranean – tides play no practical role (not verified numerically). A CANDHIS wave buoy named "Espiguette" measures swell height, period and direction.

Coordinates: The supplied coordinates (43.48398, 4.13616) lie on L'Espiguette beach; exact position of the kite zone sign not verified.
