Camargue & Golfe de Fos windsurf & kitesurf spot

Between the mouth of the Rhône and the industrial Gulf of Fos, Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône sits at the gateway to the Camargue Regional Park, about 40 minutes from Marseille and Arles. Here the Mistral – regular and often very strong, amplified by the venturi effect of the Rhône valley – meets a unique mix of spots: the ultra-flat, shallow bay of Carteau, the 10 km Plage Napoléon between the Rhône estuary and the Gulf of Fos, the 6 km sand spit of La Gracieuse (a nature reserve reachable only by boat or on foot), and further afield the wild Camargue beach of Beauduc and the big sand beach of Cavaou at Fos-sur-Mer.

It is one of the most varied kite regions on the French Mediterranean: flat water for learning and freestyle at Carteau and La Gracieuse, waves along Plage Napoléon in S/SW, and wide-open space almost everywhere. The honest flip side: the Mistral hits Carteau with gusts of 30–40 kn and more; the area straddles a nature park and the industrial port zone of Fos-sur-Mer, with a navigation channel through Carteau bay; there are mussel parks, protected nesting areas, hunting-season closures and detailed municipal zoning; and in summer the spots are crowded with kiters from all over Europe.

How the spot works

SpotWaterBest windCharacter
Carteau (Anse de Carteau)Semi-closed bay, ultra-flat, shallow – standing depth over long distancesSE (onshore, best flat conditions); Mistral N/NW works but side-off and irregularOfficial kite zone; big lawn to rig; mostly kite; very busy in summer; car park with a 2.50 m height barrier
Plage NapoléonOpen sea, 10 km beachS/SW (onshore, waves rolling along the beach – best surf-kite); Mistral N/NW dominantOne of the largest Camargue beaches; SE brings waves and Rhône currents; paid beach access and lifeguards in summer
La Gracieuse (They de la Gracieuse)6 km sand spit in the west of the Gulf of Fos; flat, standing depth for hundreds of metresMistral N/NE (strong, gusty)Classified nature reserve; access by boat (schools) or on foot from Plage Napoléon; kite practice and teaching allowed on the water bordering the north of the spit
BeauducSandy Camargue bayS and SW; SE gives nice waves but a lot of current (Rhône mouth); side-off in MistralBay without buildings, roads or rocks; managed by the Camargue Kite Club
Cavaou (Fos-sur-Mer)Big sand beachnot verifiedKnown as an excellent kite and windsurf spot, even surf when the right wind builds waves

Municipal zoning at Carteau (decree no. 2015/982): The decree regulates windsurf and kitesurf in the 300 m strip of the Carteau sector. Zone B: launching and riding are forbidden in the Anse de Carteau on the Plage Napoléon side inside the "launes" (lagoons) and on the Étang du Napoléon. Zone C: during the hunting season, launching and kiting are forbidden at the "Trou de l'Annibal" in the Anse de Carteau (Napoléon side). Zone D: kite teaching is forbidden in the 300 m strip between the municipal nautical centre and the Saint-Antoine-de-l'Hermite canal. Some forbidden zones are marked by rows of yellow buoys. Riding is also forbidden in the mussel parks and the shallow areas on the south side along the road to Plage Napoléon.

Coordinates: The supplied coordinates (43.37211, 4.90707) lie in the western Gulf of Fos, in the area north of the Gracieuse spit – on the water, not a launch point (exact position not verified).

No tides: Mediterranean – tides play no practical role (not verified numerically).
