Fort de Brégançon windsurf & kitesurf spot

The Fort de Brégançon, at Bormes-les-Mimosas on the Var coast, is a 15th-century fort on an islet linked to the mainland by a causeway – and, since 1968, the summer residence of French presidents. The water-sports spot next to it is the Plage de Cabasson, which the local tourist office presents as the ideal place for kitesurfers and windsurfers, beginners and pros alike, on Mistral days. Per a kite travel guide, Brégançon is one of the few options in the area when it blows from the west.

It is a spectacular setting – white sand, turquoise water, the fort, views to the Giens peninsula – but with clear rules. Water sports are forbidden on the beach in the summer season; the official kite-spot listing gives 1 October to 31 May as the open period. The fort and its access road are off-limits to the public, the beach is a protected natural site, parking is paid for much of the year, and nice waves form near the rocky point – where the rocks are. Several practical details, including wind behaviour outside the Mistral, could not be verified consistently.

How the spot works

Where to ride: The spot is the Plage de Cabasson (about 400 m of fine sand, per a beach guide); the small Plage de Brégançon lies to its left, after the rocks, stretching about 250 m to the causeway leading to the fort. The fort and the road behind the beach leading to it are not accessible to the public.

Season: Water sports are forbidden on Cabasson beach during the summer season; the kite-spot listing gives daily access from 1 October to 31 May. Check current dates with the Bormes-les-Mimosas tourist office.

Waves: In the Mistral, nice waves form near the rocky point; the wind is side-onshore starboard, ideal for jumps (per a Marseille windsurf guide). Riders can tack upwind to reach other beaches.

Coordinates: The supplied coordinates (43.09393, 6.32210) correspond to the Fort de Brégançon itself – not accessible. The Cabasson beach spot is given by a windsurf guide at about 43.1036 N, 6.3292 E.

No tides: Mediterranean – tides play no practical role (not verified numerically).

Wind & directions

Sources disagree beyond the Mistral: the tourist office and a local windsurf guide name the Mistral as the best direction; a kite travel guide lists E, NE and SE as best wind but also calls the spot one of the few options in westerly wind. A beach guide mentions currents forming in east wind.
