Plage Napoléon windsurf & kitesurf spot

Plage Napoléon is one of the largest beaches in the Camargue: 10 km of fine sand between the mouth of the Rhône and the Gulf of Fos, on the sea side of Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, at the gateway to the Camargue Regional Park and about 40 minutes from Marseille and Arles. It is a well-known spot for traction sports, served by a dominant Mistral all year, and brings together windsurfers, kitesurfers, sand-yacht pilots, kite-buggy and mountainboard riders.

For kiters it is above all the sea-side spot of Port-Saint-Louis: surf-kite fans find nice waves in S and SE winds, and the best directions are SW and S – which makes it a good spot when the summer thermal blows. The honest flip side: the water is often choppy and the waves can get big in strong blows; in summer the beach is full of bathers and access is paid; storms regularly push waves over the beach and car park; and sand yachts reach over 90 km/h in the enclosed speed zone. It is a spot for intermediate and advanced riders rather than first lessons – for those, the flat water of Carteau and La Gracieuse is next door.

How the spot works

Three zones (per a spot guide):

Summer zoning: From June to September part of the beach is reserved for bathers – no driving or riding through the towels. Kitesurfing is allowed all year; navigation is regulated by municipal decree no. 2015/982, which also specifies access to the Anse de Carteau from Plage Napoléon.

Parking on the sand: The town created a large car park on the sand, as close as possible to the water. Do not park there when a storm warning is issued – the waves regularly invade the beach.

Coordinates: The supplied coordinates (43.34800, 4.87372) lie at Plage Napoléon.

No tides: Mediterranean – tides play no practical role (not verified numerically).

Wind & directions

The Mistral is described as the dominant wind – regular and often very strong, amplified by the venturi effect of the Rhône valley, on a huge, often choppy stretch of water. How the Mistral sits relative to the beach was not verified; check on site.

Wind & Richtungen
