Cavaou windsurf & kitesurf spot

The Plage du Cavaou is the big sand beach of Fos-sur-Mer, at the back of the Gulf of Fos, about 35 minutes from central Marseille. It is not the postcard paradise a windsurfer might dream of – refinery, giant tanks, factories and oil tankers form the backdrop – but it is a reference spot of the region. In the Mistral it turns into flat-water speed and slalom territory where top slalom and speed windsurfers can be found; in easterly and south-easterly wind it becomes a wave and bump & jump spot with well-formed swell and wind blowing safely towards the shore.

That dual character – flat, fast offshore water in the Mistral and onshore waves in the marin – makes Cavaou one of the most complete spots around the Gulf of Fos for windsurf, kitesurf and wingfoil. The honest flip side: the Mistral blows offshore and pushes you out to sea; kitesurfing is banned in summer (about 15 June – 15 September); the shorebreak can be a real challenge on the far part of the beach; strong S/SE can build imposing waves; and the industrial port is right next door. Several details on clubs and facilities come from older sources and could not be verified for 2026.

How the spot works

The beach: More than a kilometre of sand, lined with free car parks (about 500 spaces per a spot guide); guarded beach in summer, snacks, showers and toilets; regularly awarded the Blue Flag (per a spot guide).

Zones: According to an older guide, the kite zone is at the end of the road and the car park, while the windsurf area is in front of the bungalows. Another source places the kite corner on the right-hand side of the spot towards the docks ("darses"), with more than 50 kites on SE days and riding for experienced kiters above 20 kn.

Seasonal kite ban: Kitesurfing is forbidden during the summer season (family beach) – roughly 15 June to 15 September; the spot is open for kiters from about 15 September to 15 June. One spot database even states that kiteboarding is forbidden without dates on the signs – check the signage on site.

Mistral sessions: The Mistral comes in from N/NW – offshore. The water stays flat and the runs are parallel to the beach; per an older source, the local club keeps a motorboat ready to intervene if someone drifts. A large sandbank lies close to the Fun Fos club (older source).

Marin sessions (E/SE): Past the shorebreak and the first white water, the peaks rise steep and disordered – good jumping conditions; short sections do not favour wave riding, except in a big easterly, 200 m in front of the club or on the left of the spot towards the port, where nice sets can form.

Coordinates: The supplied coordinates (43.43133, 4.91864) match the Cavaou spot.

No tides: Mediterranean – tides play no practical role (not verified numerically).

Wind & directions

Sources broadly agree that NW (Mistral) is offshore and E/SE onshore; one database instead describes N/NNE Mistral as side-on to onshore – check on site.

Wind & Richtungen
