Ski und Wakepark Düren windsurf & kitesurf spot

Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) — two cables, more than thirty obstacles and a time slot that turns the lake into a mirror. DOCK5 sits on the Dürener Badesee between Cologne and Aachen, less than a 45-minute drive from either city. From the outside it's a cable park under willow trees; in the detail it's one of the best thought-out setups in the Rhineland — a park that gets beginners onto the water on day one and keeps park riders busy for whole seasons.

The name isn't a coincidence: DOCK5, Am Badesee 5. The entrance is on the east side of the lake, and the grounds are strictly separate from the public lido next door.

The concept

Cable-driven, and therefore reliable. No waiting for wind, no swell, no tide. What matters here are the operating hours and whether it's blowing too hard.

Two installations with clearly divided roles:

Full size cable (6 masts) — the big one, a classic lift starting to the right. A lap runs about 750 metres and takes roughly 90 seconds, with up to ten riders on the water at once. During public sessions the speed sits at around 30 km/h. This is where the normal day-to-day riding happens, and where the features are.

Two tower cable (2 masts) — 150 metres with a single carrier that shuttles back and forth. Acceleration, speed and line length are adjustable per rider, coaching is one-to-one, and a water start is possible anywhere along the run. No rider behind you, no empty line at your back. That's why the courses are here — and why experienced riders come back to train on it.

On top of that: a dedicated foiling programme, SUP, beach volleyball, and a food and camping area that turns a session into a full day.

Conditions & levels

Flat-water cable, no swell. What lifts this spot above average isn't the conditions — those are predictable — it's the time slots. DOCK5 staggers speed across the day and the week instead of sending everyone down the same line:

Langsame Doppelstunde (slow double hour) — Saturdays and Sundays 12:00 to 14:00, roughly from late May to mid-September. The first hour runs at 23–25 km/h, the second at 25–27 km/h. It's the gentlest entry onto a full-size cable you'll find in the region, and the reason children here often get up and riding in their first session. If you're learning the sport, plan your visit around this window.

Public session — around 30 km/h, the standard setting. Enough pull for jumps, comfortable for anyone with a solid start.

Early Board — Thursdays 08:00 to 10:00, roughly from late June to late August. Just after sunrise, glassy water, almost nobody out. Numbers are limited, so booking ahead is worth it. Given the choice, ride this one.

For experienced riders the feature setup is the real argument. It's built from LEAN ELEMENTS, UNIT Parktech and SHAPE modules plus in-house builds, deliberately laid out so goofy and regular riders both find lines. More than thirty obstacles, including a 25-metre Monster Funbox, a rainbow handrail of 12.5 metres, a custom pipe 17 metres long at 90 cm diameter, the Big Pipe at 115 cm with a step-up/step-down system, kickers in M and L, a 12-metre step-up table and the Raph Signature Pool. The setup gets rebuilt over the course of the season.

Important: features are explicitly for experienced riders only. Helmet and vest are mandatory on them, fins are not allowed, and rental boards may not be used — there are dedicated park boards in the rental fleet for obstacles.

Sports: Wakeboard ✅ · Water ski ✅ · Kneeboard ✅ · Wakeskate ✅ · Mono ski ✅ · Wake foil ✅ · SUP ✅ · Beach volleyball ✅ · Swimming ❌

That last point isn't a typo: swimming is prohibited on the DOCK5 grounds and there is no lifeguard. If you want to swim, use the lido next door — separate site, separate entry fee.

Courses & coaching

Getting started is structured and not expensive:

Beginner course (ESK) — Saturdays and Sundays 10:00 to 13:00, maximum six participants. Two hours of drills and coaching on the 2-mast cable, then a third hour in the slow session on the big cable. Coaching, equipment and RFID wristband included. Book at least seven days ahead.
Start session (SS2M) — 60 minutes on the 2-mast cable, maximum four participants, Friday late afternoons in July and August. The cheapest way to find out whether the sport suits you.
Holiday course — multi-day during the NRW summer holidays, with theory, warm-up, water time on the 6-mast cable and lunch included.
Wake foil course — two hours on the 2-mast cable, maximum four participants, coaching and equipment included. The individually controllable speed makes this close to ideal for learning to foil; on a standard full-size cable it's considerably harder.
Foil Drive rental — 30 minutes of water time with electric assist fitted to your own setup, mounted on site. Only for riders with relevant experience.
Personal coaching, school groups and children's birthdays complete the programme.

Children under ten must be accompanied by a parent or guardian on courses. For public sessions DOCK5 recommends a minimum age of ten.

On site — infrastructure & operator

Run by DOCK5 GmbH, and it shows that the people working here ride themselves.

Blue Power Marine pro shop — sales, rental, advice, on-site ticketing.
Sonnenralle — the waterside restaurant with a rotating menu. Terrace overlooking the cable, and the place where a session turns into an evening.
Barbecue spots and camping meadow — reservable through Sonnenralle. Informal barbecuing is not permitted on the grounds; open fire is prohibited altogether.
Webcam and live readings — air and water temperature sit right in the website navigation. Worth a look before you set off.
Wakesys booking system — time tickets, courses, cable hire and gift vouchers can all be sorted online in advance.
Locker — seasonal rental for a full set of gear, if you'd rather not haul it every time.

Rental: impact vest, pair skis and kneeboard are free. Wetsuits, easy wakeboards, park boards, wakeskates, mono skis and helmets carry a fee — on-site booking only, limited stock, bring a deposit.

Cable hire: both installations can be booked exclusively, the big one only outside public session hours and at least seven days in advance. Each booked hour includes entry for ten people (6 mast) or five people (2 mast). For groups of 15 to 25, two hours is a realistic figure; from 30 people upwards, three is better.

Events: ANDOCKEN, the park's own contest, runs in May — with qualification rounds, handmade trophies and free entry. If you want to see the park at full tilt once, come that weekend.

Tickets & practicalities

Time tickets come as one hour, two hours or a full day, each with a surcharge at weekends and on NRW public holidays. Season passes run 365 days from the date of purchase: an annual pass tiered by age (under 12, under 16, adult) and a discount card costing a one-off 80 € that then knocks money off every time ticket. Early Board is included in the annual pass, but not in the discount card.

Two details that make a real difference:

An RFID wristband is mandatory and costs a one-off 6 €. It stays reusable, and if you already have one from another cable park you can bring it — link it to your account once at the shop and you're set.
Your time ticket only starts on the first scan at the start dock, not at purchase. So you can change, set up your board and decide for yourself when the clock begins. Sounds minor, is gold in practice.

No registration is needed for public sessions — turning up spontaneously works. Entry to the grounds themselves costs a small fee on fine-weather days (adults, reduced for under-18s, free under 6); it's included with any watersports activity and waived in poor weather. Parking is handled via the Badesee Düren car park.

Best season

The season runs from early April to the end of October, in three stages:

Period Opening
Early season (early to late April) Fri from 14:00 · Sat, Sun, public holidays from 12:00
Main season (May to early October) Mon–Wed from 16:00 · Thu, Fri from 14:00 · Sat, Sun, public holidays from 12:00
Late season (October) Fri from 14:00 · Sat, Sun, public holidays from 12:00

Operations end at sunset, 21:00 at the latest. July and August deliver the best water temperatures — the lake comfortably clears 20 °C in high summer. May, June and September are much quieter and often better for feature sessions, simply because there's less traffic on the cable. Outside high summer a wetsuit belongs in the plan; rental is available for every temperature.

Exact dates, special days and cancellations are posted on the website, with short-notice changes going out via Instagram.

Good to know (safety & rules)

Requirements: confident swimming ability is mandatory. Vests are compulsory on both cables and rental is free. Use is at your own risk.

Cable etiquette worth reading before you go:

Form a queue on the start dock; don't push in.
After a fall, look back immediately, keep clear of lines and riders, and swim to the nearest exit point. If you can't get out of the way, dive under.
Always use the turn buoys. If you can't reach the handle, let go.
Exit at the white buoys before the motor mast — not at the start dock.
Hold the handle with your hands only. Never put an arm or your head through it, never place it between your legs.
No power tricks in the corners: let the carrier pass the wheel first.
Let go immediately if you fall or lose equipment. Water starts are not permitted on the big cable.
Floating docks and the start area require a valid ticket.

On the grounds: DOCK5 is a barefoot park — leave the glass at home. No swimming, no lifeguard. Pets are not permitted, open fire and shishas are prohibited, bicycles must be locked outside, and noise stays at conversation level. The site largely follows natural succession and sits on water with a resident wildlife population: swans, ducks and geese are not to be fed. Staying on site after 21:00 requires prior permission.

Honest caveats:

Wind can end the day. In strong wind DOCK5 shuts down operations — this happens several times a season and is announced at short notice via Instagram. Check before you drive over.
Capacity is limited. On hot weekends you may find that no more visitors are being admitted.
Weekends cost more and are busier. If you're flexible, ride Monday to Wednesday from 16:00 — same cable, more space, cheaper rate.
This isn't a beach holiday. If you're looking for a place with a lawn, a swimming lake and a lifeguard, this isn't it. DOCK5 is a sports facility with a restaurant, not an open-air lido.
The short version

First session: book the beginner course at the weekend, or — if you'd rather try it on your own — show up Saturday or Sunday at 12:00 for the Langsame Doppelstunde.

Experienced and after the features: weekday from 16:00, rent a park board, take a helmet with it.

And if you want to understand once why people get up early for this sport: Thursday, 08:00, Early Board. The lake lies there flat as a sheet of glass, and the first lap of the day is yours.
