Jericoacoara, "Jeri" for short, is a former fishing village on the north coast of Brazil, completely surrounded by the Jericoacoara National Park (Parque Nacional de Jericoacoara, managed by ICMBio). Sandy streets, dunes, lagoons and an almost daily trade wind in the second half of the year have made it one of the best-known windsurf destinations in the world. The heart of the spot is "The Point": at the western end of the bay, small, clean waves bend around a headland and roll up a sandy shore, with the wind coming from the right.
Jeri is not a lonely insider spot anymore. In high season the village is busy, the water at the point can get crowded, and strict zoning applies: windsurfing at the point, kitesurfing in a separate kite-only zone behind the Sunset Dune, and bathing and surfing in their own areas. If you accept these rules and the crowds, you get one of the most reliable wind spots anywhere – ideal for learning down-the-line wave riding and jumping in forgiving waves over sand.
How the spot works
The Point (windsurf): The waves wrap around the headland at the western end of the bay. With the wind from the right, blowing side- to side-offshore, you jump on the way out, surf a wave on the way in and can finish on the flat water of the inside. About 200 m downwind of the point there is wave-free freeride water.
Downwind to the Sunset Dune (Duna do Pôr do Sol): Wide freeride area with flat water between the point and the dune. At the dune itself, flat water and small ramps make it a freestyle spot – and a less crowded alternative when the point is busy.
Jeri Kite Zone (kite only): The official kite area directly reachable from the village lies behind the Sunset Dune. National park rules designate it as kite-only; windsurfing is forbidden there. A natural flat-water lagoon formed by sand blown off the dune fills at big spring tides. The wind here is slightly offshore – the zone operator runs a safety boat.
Malhada (upwind, experts): On the other side of town, upwind of the point, is a side-onshore beach with the best starboard-tack jumping ramps in the area. It is shared by windsurfers, kiters, surfers and bathers and has its own zoning (see "Good to know").
Tide and wind shadow: The headland and the hill behind the village (the "serrote") create a wind shadow. At low tide the water is further from the headland, so the wind shadow is smaller – this is considered the best windsurf window. At high tide the waves are slightly bigger, but the inside gets very light. Every week is different because the tide shifts.

Sports line
Windsurf ✅ – The core sport here. The point is reserved for windsurfers.
Kitesurf ⚠️ – Prohibited at the point and in front of the village beach (to protect bathers). Allowed in the Jeri Kite Zone behind the Sunset Dune and, for experts only, in the free zone at Malhada. Many kiters also use the downwinder towards Guriú and Tatajuba or the kite beaches of Preá.
Wingfoil ⚠️ – Not addressed in any zoning rule we could find. Whether wings are permitted at the point or in the Kite Zone is not verified – ask ICMBio or the local schools before riding.
SUP ⚠️ – Possible on light-wind days and on the freshwater lagoons (e.g. Lagoa do Paraíso, Lagoa Azul). Keep out of the windsurf and kite lanes on windy days.
Wakeboard 🚫 – No cable park or boat-towing operation at Jeri could be verified; the village is inside a national park.
Surf ✅ – The point wave is soft and forgiving – good for longboarding, learning to surf and foil surfing, especially at higher tide when the wind drops on the inside and in the rainy season from late December. At Malhada, the area closest to the hill is reserved for bathers and surfers.
Courses and local schools
Club Ventos – Established windsurf centre at the point with rental and instruction; rescue cover is included in its rental package.
Jeri Kite Zone – Kite school and operator for the kite-only zone behind the Sunset Dune, with safety boat.
Since 2016, an ICMBio ordinance requires operators offering commercial windsurf and kite instruction in the national park to register with the park administration; authorisations are valid for 12 months. Choose a school that holds this authorisation.
According to the local kite association (AJK), kite lessons are not to be given at Malhada.
*Prices, opening hours and current school list: not verified.*
On-site facilities and logistics
Getting there: The nearest airport is the Jericoacoara regional airport near Cruz. Flights there can be expensive and baggage fees high, so many travellers fly into Fortaleza and transfer by road. The last stretch to the village leads through the national park and dunes and requires a 4×4 or buggy with a local driver.
Tourist tax: Visitors must pay the municipal Taxa de Turismo Sustentável (TTS): R$ 41.50 per person for stays of up to 10 days (status 2026); longer stays cost extra. Children up to 12 and people over 60 are exempt. It can be paid online in advance or at the 24-hour counter at the village entrance. A planned additional national park entrance fee was suspended by court decision as of spring 2026 – check before travelling.
In the village: Wide range of accommodation, restaurants and shops. Card terminals may fail at the entrance – carry cash or have PIX available.
Vehicles: The municipality has banned UTVs in the village and sensitive environmental areas; ICMBio warns about vehicle damage to the dunes.

Tatajuba / Laguna Grande – very flat lagoon water; local pros report wind at least 5 kn stronger than at Jeri.
Preá – the region's kite hotspot east of Jeri, launching either side of the Pedra Baleia rocks; start of a roughly 15 km downwinder.
Barrinha – flatter and shallower than Preá, especially at low tide.
Maceió (approx. 3 hours by car) – similar conditions but fewer people on the water, slightly more onshore.

Good to know (safety)
Zoning is binding. Windsurf at the point, kite in the Kite Zone, bathers and surfers in their areas. The national park is strictly enforced: in 2024 it was the Brazilian federal protected area that issued the most fines.
Wind shadow and gusts: The headland and the hill behind the village cause turbulence and wind holes, especially at high tide. Near the Sunset Dune the wind is often gusty.
Offshore component: At the point and in the Kite Zone the wind has an offshore component. Gear failure can mean drifting away from the beach.
Malhada specifics (per the local kite association AJK): rocks in and out of the water, not always visible; narrow landing space at high tide; the curve of the coast causes pronounced drift after a crash; riding at high tide is discouraged; in the exclusion zone near the hill, sail sports must keep 200 m from the beach; emergency landing there is allowed only for safety. The spot is recommended only for experienced, self-sufficient riders who can hold their ground upwind.
Rescue ends early: Rescue at Jeri is provided by private companies, which, according to AJK, end their service at 5 pm. Anyone riding later takes full responsibility, including the risk of drifting out to open sea. Rent from a centre that includes rescue cover.
Crowds: Up to around 60 riders have been counted at the point in November. Right-of-way rules apply strictly.
Sun and heat: Strong equatorial sun – protect skin and eyes and drink enough.
Jeri is no longer a secret: crowded village, crowded point in high season, many non-watersports tourists.
The windsurf zone is restricted. Beginners are better served elsewhere or in the freeride area downwind.
Kiting directly in front of the village is not allowed; the Kite Zone is gusty close to the dune.
Rescue is private and ends at 5 pm.
Getting there is long and costly: flight, road transfer, 4×4 through the dunes, plus tourist tax.
Outside the wind season (roughly February to June) the spot is not a reliable wind destination.
Wing and wakeboard: no verified options.
Short advice per sport
Windsurf: Sail the point at low tide, switch to the Sunset Dune when the point is crowded, and only go to Malhada if you are confident in side-onshore waves.
Kitesurf: Use the Kite Zone or head to Preá, Guriú or Tatajuba. Never kite at the point.
Wingfoil: Clarify with ICMBio or a school where wings are allowed before your first session.
SUP: Mornings or light-wind days, or the lagoons.
Wakeboard: Not possible at Jeri.
Surf: Bring or rent a longboard; the best surf days are at higher tide and in the rainy season.

B. Lagoa do Paraíso, Lagoa Azul).

Windsurf ✅ – O esporte principal aqui.
Lagoa do Paraíso, Lagoa Azul).

Sol e calor: Sol equatorial forte – proteja pele e olhos e beba bastante água.
