Cumbuco (Lagoa do Cauípe) windsurf & kitesurf spot
Lagoa do Cauípe is a shallow, flat-water lagoon at the mouth of the Rio Cauípe, a few kilometres north (downwind) of the former fishing village of Cumbuco, which lies about 30 km west of Fortaleza in the municipality of Caucaia. Only a narrow strip of sand separates the lagoon from the ocean. With the steady east trade wind and water that is often only standing depth, it has become one of Brazil's best-known kite lagoons – both a training ground for beginners and a stage where international pros and brand photo shoots are a regular sight.
Cauípe is not a secret, and it is not large. In the windy season the lagoon fills up quickly, often by noon, and the water level – and with it the size of the rideable area – changes over the year. What you get in return is butter-flat, warm water, reliable wind, a relaxed barraca scene on the shore and the open ocean of Cumbuco right next door for anyone who wants chop, downwinders or waves.
How the spot works
The lagoon: Flat water with shallow areas that depend on the water level. One kite school states an average depth of only about 120 cm. According to a spot guide, the lagoon was recently enlarged in both depth and width, making it more symmetrical and more usable for foilers.
Zoning by level: The southern part of the lagoon is reserved for beginners, the northern part for all other riders.
Launch areas: The most used launches are on the western shore next to the kite school and restaurant Bê Kite Cauípe, and on the south-eastern sandbank known as Barra do Cauípe. Launch and landing is on sand, lined with coconut palms rather than buildings.
Capacity: One spot guide puts the capacity at about 30 riders. A local portal gives the lagoon's size as roughly 75 × 250 m and notes that it can become too small on weekends (current size not verified – the lagoon has reportedly been enlarged since).
Best times: Early from about 8 to 11 am, and again from around 4 pm when the crowds (and the wind) start to leave. During the week mainly kiters are on the water.
Cumbuco beach next door: A 4 km wide, flat sandy beach with side-onshore wind, choppy sea and a small beach break – the ocean alternative and the start of the downwinder to Cauípe.

Kitesurf ✅ – The core sport. Ideal for learning and for freestyle progression on flat water.
Wingfoil ⚠️ – Foilers reportedly benefit from the enlarged lagoon, but no wing-specific rules or rental at the lagoon could be verified. The lagoon is shallow and packed with kites – ride early or late and check depth.
Windsurf ⚠️ – The state environmental agency lists windsurfing and kitesurfing as suitable activities in the protected area, and windsurfers are seen on the beaches. At the lagoon itself, however, kites dominate and space is tight; no windsurf rental at the lagoon could be verified.
SUP ⚠️ – Possible on calm mornings; on windy days the lagoon belongs to the kiters. No SUP rental at the lagoon verified.
Wakeboard ⚠️ – Not possible at the lagoon. Fazendinha Adventure Park near Cumbuco lists wakeboarding among its activities; type of system (cable or boat), prices and opening times not verified.
Surf 🚫 (at the lagoon) – No waves in the lagoon. Surfers go to Pico das Almas, a wave spot a few kilometres from Cumbuco, or to Taíba, described as one of the best wave spots in northern Brazil with waves up to 3 m.
Courses and local schools
Cumbuco is packed with kite schools; many teach first lessons at Cauípe and include transport to the lagoon. Examples (no endorsement, prices not verified):
Bê Kite Cauípe – kite school and restaurant on the western shore.
CKC – Cauípe Kitesurf Clube – beginner group lessons with at most 6 students per instructor, 10-hour course.
Kite Poeira – transport to the lagoon, vests, helmets and radio included; instructors certified by ABK and IKO; children from 7.
Duro Beach Kite Center – first lessons at Cauípe, advanced lessons in front of the school on the beach.
Windtown – school in Cumbuco.
On-site facilities and logistics
Getting there: Fly into Fortaleza (Pinto Martins, FOR), then about 30 km by road to Cumbuco. From Cumbuco to the lagoon about 30 minutes by car past Lagoa do Banana, or by buggy or taxi – or as a kite downwinder of roughly 6–8 km.
At the lagoon: Several barracas (beach restaurants), mainly at the southern end and on the western shore, serving simple food and drinks – with a view of the pros.
Barra do Cauípe: A reviewer notes there is no tourist infrastructure on the beach side and a shortcut on foot over a narrow bridge – bring water.
Protected area: The lagoon lies in the state protected area APA do Lagamar do Cauípe (Decree 24.957/1998, 1,884 ha, municipality of Caucaia).

Good to know (safety)
Kite traffic: The lagoon can be crowded; beginners in particular need to watch other kiters. Respect the beginner zone in the south.
Shallow water: Depth depends on the water level; watch for fins and foils. Crashes happen in shallow water – ride with a helmet when learning.
Cars at Barra do Cauípe: Vehicles drive past the south-eastern launch – keep lines and kites clear.
Offshore wind at Cumbuco beach: In the morning the wind is side-offshore at the beach – no solo sessions without a safety plan.
Heat and sun: 26–35 °C air temperature; protect skin and eyes and drink enough.
Rescue: No dedicated water rescue service at the lagoon verified. Emergency numbers (Brazil): fire brigade/rescue 193, ambulance (SAMU) 192, police 190.
Honest limitations
Small, busy lagoon: often packed by noon, too tight for many riders on weekends.
Water level and size change over the year – what you see in photos may not match your trip.
Beginners and pros share limited space; collisions are the main risk.
Almost a kite-only spot: windsurf, wing and SUP are possible only with restrictions, surf not at all.
Outside the wind season (February–May) the spot is not reliable.
Lagoon exact dimensions and depth today: not verified.
Short advice per sport
Kitesurf: Bring a quiver around 10 m², ride early (8–11 am) or late (after 4 pm), and stick to the zone for your level.
Wingfoil: Ride only when the lagoon is quiet and deep enough; the ocean at Cumbuco may be the better option.
Windsurf: Better on the open beaches than in the kite-packed lagoon.
SUP: Calm mornings only.
Wakeboard: Check Fazendinha Adventure Park directly.
Surf: Go to Pico das Almas or Taíba.

Windtown – Schule in Cumbuco.
Schutzgebiet: Die Lagune liegt im staatlichen Umweltschutzgebiet APA do Lagamar do Cauípe (Dekret Nr. 24.957/1998, 1.884 ha, Gemeinde Caucaia).

SUP: Nur an ruhigen Vormittagen.
Wakeboard: Direkt beim Fazendinha Adventure Park nachfragen.

Windtown – escola no Cumbuco.

Wakeboard: Consulte diretamente o Fazendinha Adventure Park.
Surf: Ir ao Pico das Almas ou à Taíba.
