Joaquina and Praia Mole are two neighbouring, exposed beach breaks on the east coast of Santa Catarina Island, home of the city of Florianópolis ("Floripa"). Joaquina has a long history as a surf competition beach and is regarded by one major surf guide as the most consistent and often the best beach break in Santa Catarina; Praia Mole, just to the north towards Barra da Lagoa, is a smaller bay framed by hills where many of Floripa's best surfers can be found when conditions line up. Behind Joaquina rise the famous dunes – the island's sandboarding playground – and beyond them lies the Lagoa da Conceição, the island's centre for wind sports.
This is first and foremost a surf spot. The best waves come in the southern winter with south and south-east groundswells; in summer the beaches are crowded with bathers, and wind sports on the open ocean here depend heavily on swell and wind direction. Anyone travelling with kite, windsurf or wing gear will usually base themselves at the Lagoa da Conceição, a few kilometres away, and treat Joaquina and Mole as wave options for experienced riders.
How the spot works
Joaquina: About 3 km of fine sand, exposed beach break with mainly left-handers. Groundswells are more frequent than wind swells; the best swell direction is south-east, with offshore wind from the north-west. Often crowded, with dangerous rip currents. At the left (southern) end there are rocks where the sea is calmer. One guide recommends timing sessions for the incoming tide, which tends to clean up and shape the peaks.
Praia Mole: Exposed beach break with lefts and rights. The north end offers quality peaks on small days, with waves peeling off the rocky headland; bigger swells close out the rights, and the lefts hold to slightly overhead. The middle of the beach has sand-bottom peaks. In the south corner, sheltered from the wind, a spot called Gravatá handles bigger south/south-east swells and produces a right. The hills around the bay protect Mole from everything except straight onshore easterly wind – when south wind blows out other beaches, surfers head here.
Wind sports on the ocean: Kite schools list Joaquina and Praia Mole among the east-facing beaches that can offer good sailing conditions depending on swell. A known kite downwinder runs from Rio Tavares to Joaquina, for riders comfortable with variable wind and waves.
The wind-sports hub nearby: The Lagoa da Conceição, about 5 km from Praia Mole, is the island's hotspot for windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking and more, with flat water, shallow areas and most schools and rental centres.

Surf ✅ – The core sport. Consistent beach breaks, best in winter; Joaquina for advanced surfers, Mole for surfers with some experience. Beginners should take lessons, surf small days and stay near the lifeguards in the middle of the beach at Mole.
Kitesurf ⚠️ – Possible for experienced riders depending on swell and wind; Joaquina is the end point of a downwinder from Rio Tavares. Crowded bathing areas in summer. Flat water and schools are at the Lagoa da Conceição.
Windsurf ⚠️ – Joaquina and Mole are listed among the island's windsurf and kite spots, but only as wave options for experienced sailors. Schools, rental and flat water are at the Lagoa da Conceição.
Wingfoil ⚠️ – Not verified at Joaquina/Mole. A local school recommends the northern beaches Jurerê and Daniela, with flat water, for wing and foil.
SUP ⚠️ – Only on very calm days near the rocks at Joaquina, or in the surf for experienced paddlers. For flat-water SUP, the Lagoa da Conceição is the obvious choice.
Wakeboard 🚫 – Open, wave-exposed ocean beaches; no cable park or towing offer at Joaquina or Mole could be verified.
Courses and local schools
Examples (no endorsement, prices not verified):
Surf at Joaquina: College Surf School and Surf's Up Club offer lessons for all levels and board rental.
Surf in Florianópolis: Nexus Surf is among the island's surf camps and schools.
Kite at the Lagoa da Conceição: Gokite, one of the pioneer kite schools in Brazil, runs lessons with a support boat and offers kites, wings and boards; Floripa Kite School is located on Av. das Rendeiras.
Windsurf and kite at the Lagoa: Windcenter offers lessons for beginners.
On-site facilities and logistics
Getting there: Hercílio Luz airport (FLN) is about 14 km in a straight line from Praia Mole. Mole is on the SC-406, about 15.5 km from the centre or 10 minutes from Lagoa da Conceição; from the parking areas it is a short 2–3-minute trail to the sand. Buses run along the SC-406; from the Lagoa da Conceição terminal to Mole takes about 30 minutes.
Joaquina: Public and private parking close to the sand; in summer demand is high – arrive early. Kiosks, bars and restaurants nearby (the "sequência de camarão", a shrimp menu, is a local classic).
Traffic: On summer weekends traffic can double travel times; around New Year and Carnival parking is almost fully booked.
Lifeguards: Joaquina has lifeguard support, especially in high season; flags on the beach mark safe swimming areas. Exact lifeguard hours and season: not verified.

Nearby alternatives
Lagoa da Conceição – the island's flat-water hub for windsurf, kite, wing and SUP, with most schools. Note: swimming in the lagoon itself is not advisable due to wastewater pollution, according to a kite guide.
Barra da Lagoa – described as Floripa's beginner surf capital.
Campeche – considered the island's best kite-wave spot, especially at Riozinho, with side-shore wind.
Jurerê and Praia da Daniela (north) – flat water, good for beginners, wing and foil.
Moçambique – long east-facing beach; kite downwinder from Moçambique to Barra da Lagoa.
Santinho – described as the island's best beginner surf beach, protected from the biggest south swells.
Rainy or no-wind days
Sandboarding on the Dunas da Joaquina (board rental on site; go early morning or late afternoon)
Hiking over the dunes to viewpoints over the ocean and the Lagoa
Boat trips and seafood on the Av. das Rendeiras at the Lagoa da Conceição
Paragliding at Praia Mole (operators and conditions not verified)
Good to know (safety)
Rip currents: Both beaches have dangerous rips – the most concrete risk for surfers and swimmers. Swim only in flagged areas.
Winter power: On big swells, even beaches that are usually forgiving turn fast and unforgiving; the paddle-out at Mole gets harder the bigger it gets.
Rocks: Rocky headland at the north end of Mole and rocks at the south end of Joaquina.
Crowds: Joaquina is often crowded in the water and on the beach; in summer, wind sports must keep clear of bathers.
Cold water in winter: "Cold like much of the island" – bring a wetsuit for the winter surf season (exact winter water temperatures not verified). In January/February the water is around 22 °C.
Sun and wind: Strong summer sun; the north-east wind cools but dries out the skin.
Not a wind-sports destination in its own right: for kite, windsurf and wing, the Lagoa da Conceição and other beaches are usually better.
Wind is less constant than in north-east Brazil.
Surf windows can last 48–72 hours and then go flat – watch the forecast.
Crowded water at Joaquina, crowded beaches, traffic and parking problems in summer.
Joaquina is not a beginner surf spot; beginners are better served at Barra da Lagoa or Santinho.
Wakeboard: not possible here.
The coordinates supplied for this guide (-27.59667, -48.54917) point to the Florianópolis city area, not to the beaches themselves; exact beach coordinates not verified.
