Paros Kite Beach

Paros Kite Beach (Pounda) Β· πŸ“ Greece Paros, Cyclades (Greece) β€” the flat-water Meltemi funnel of the Aegean. Paros Kite Beach lies at Pounda on the south-west coast of the Cycladic island of Paros, about 8 km south of Parikia. Its heart is the roughly 1.3 km wide strait between Paros and neighbouring Antiparos, which acts like a funnel and concentrates the summer wind into one of the Mediterranean's most reliable riding zones. It's a world-renowned kite and windsurf spot that regularly hosts international competitions, with a sporty, international atmosphere on the water and a laid-back island feel on land. The wind Pounda lives off the Meltemi, the strong, dry summer wind from the north to north-west (N/NW). It blows side-shore to side-onshore here, consistently across the season, typically 12–35 knots in summer, on average 4–5 windy days per week. Because it's a thermal-plus-pressure system, it's most reliable in the peak summer months. Honest caveat: light NE winds combined with heat give poor, unreliable conditions; the spot also works on some southerly winds. Conditions & levels A flat-water spot β€” the great advantage of Pounda. The water is crystal clear, sandy-bottomed and shallow/waist-deep over a wide stretch, making it ideal for beginners and for flat-water freestyle. In stronger wind from around 20 knots, some chop rolls in from the north parallel to the beach, but there's no real swell. Beginners practise close to shore in the shallows; freestylers and speed riders use the flat water further out. In short: shallow flat water for learning, steady side-shore wind for progression. It offers small-group and private lessons to international standards, full equipment rental, and operates a live webcam at the spot. It also runs the beachfront accommodation Anapnoe directly on the shore. Several beach bars, rental stations and other schools round out the scene, and the Antiparos ferry departs from one end of the beach. Best season The Meltemi is a summer wind, so the prime season runs roughly April–October, with the most reliable and strongest wind in July and August (also the busiest and hottest). Thanks to mild water temperatures the spot is rideable almost year-round; in summer you usually don't need a wetsuit, while a shorty or light wetsuit is comfortable in the shoulder months. Good to know (safety & rules) Respect the beach rules that separate kite and windsurfers. Crucially, the prevailing wind blows out towards the open sea, so beginners should not sail alone in the early morning or after sunset β€” ride during the open hours of the centres with a rescue service. Watch for reefs, the ferry traffic, and busy water in peak season. The spot is not suited to casual swimming or sunbathing because of the strong wind and kite traffic. ⚠️ Orientation only, not a guarantee β€” wind, waves, current and closures change daily. Always check the current forecast and ask local schools; if in doubt, don't go out alone. The biggest danger is usually the current, not the wave height.
