Karpathos – Afiartis · 📍 Greece Karpathos, Dodecanese (Greece) — the high-wind Meltemi playground with three bays for every level. Karpathos lies in the southern Aegean, about 150 km south-east of Rhodes, between Rhodes and Crete. The central spot is Afiartis (Kipi Afiarti) in the south of the island, right next to the airport. Squeezed between the two larger islands, Karpathos amplifies the Meltemi through its mountains into some of the most consistent strong wind in Greece — so reliable it has hosted a windsurfing world championship, and a favourite that European windsurfers return to year after year. The wind The defining wind is the Meltemi from the north (N). Funnelled and accelerated by the terrain, it reaches 35–40 knots on July and August afternoons — ideal for small sail sizes and strong-wind riders. In May, June and September it blows less fiercely and more steadily, which suits a wider range of windsurfers. Honest caveat: this is a genuinely windy, high-energy spot in high summer — great for experienced sailors, potentially overpowering for beginners on the strongest days. Conditions & levels Afiartis is really three bays with different characters, so every level finds its water. Chicken Bay has an ~80 m wide flat, shallow area with a protective spit — ideal for beginners and freestylers. Gun Bay is the high-wind bay (cross-offshore); it's flat close to shore for gybe practice, and after ~300–500 m a roughly one-metre wind wave builds up, perfect for jumps and loops. Devil's Bay (reached out of Gun Bay) offers another 1–2 Beaufort more wind over flat water — a fast blasting zone for experts. In short: learn in Chicken Bay, progress and jump in Gun Bay, go flat-out in Devil's Bay. The anchor is the ION CLUB Karpathos (Club Anemos), an established international operator running two centres — in Gun Bay and Chicken Bay, about 800 m apart — with current Fanatic/Duotone gear, courses for all levels, and a live webcam at the spot. The Gun Bay base has sunbeds, a bar, a quality restaurant (Anemos) and WiFi — the classic place to relax and watch the action in the bay. Other operators such as the Baja Bar & Windsurfing Station and Meltemi Windsurfing Karpathos are based here too, and beyond the water there's mountain biking, yoga and climbing on offer. Best season The season runs from early May to mid-October. High summer (July–August) brings the strongest, most reliable wind for advanced riders; May–June and September are milder and steadier, better for progression and for a broader mix of levels. Water is warm through the season; a shorty or light wetsuit is plenty in summer. Good to know (safety & rules) Gun Bay's wind has a cross-offshore component and gets very strong in high summer, so match your gear to the day and pick the right bay for your level — Chicken Bay is the safe, sheltered choice for beginners. As always in Greece, kiting zones and local rules can change and some areas require care around windsurf traffic, so check current rules with the centre before rigging. The lake— the sea here is deep off the bays, so confident water skills and self-rescue matter on the strong days.
