Paracas is a small town in Peru's coastal desert, about 3–4 hours south of Lima, on the edge of the Paracas National Reserve. Its bay is a huge, U-shaped, shallow lagoon sheltered from the Pacific swell, and a thermal wind – driven by the hot desert and the cold Humboldt Current and funnelled between large sand dunes – blows on most afternoons for much of the year. Flamingos, pelicans and sea lions share the water with the riders. That makes Paracas one of South America's best places to learn and progress in kiting and wingfoiling.
The conditions are simpler than on many ocean spots, but they have their own quirks. The wind is nearly zero in the morning and often shows up badly on forecasts, it can build to 30–40 kn on strong days, sandstorms occur, and there are wind shadows downwind of the schools. Water temperatures are cool for a desert location, and some areas of the bay are closed to protect the birds. Weekends bring riders down from Lima; during the week the spot is often quiet.
How the spot works
Paracas Bay ("The Point"): The main spot, about a 5-minute drive from town. Shallow water with a sandy bottom for about 100 m, relatively flat close to the beach and choppier the stronger the wind. The beach is large with plenty of space to set up.
Wind pattern: In the morning the wind often comes from the north and rarely exceeds about 10 kn; around midday it turns south and blows between two large sand dunes, creating a venturi effect. From the point the wind is side-offshore, blowing from the left.
The opposite side of the bay: Experienced riders cross to the other side for a cross-offshore "speed spot" with butter-flat water.
Wind shadows: Downwind of the kite schools there are areas where the wind dies completely; the schools run boat rescue.
Paracas National Reserve: Reachable by 4×4, with wave spots and further flat-water lagoons – Playón (small to medium waves), Laguna Grande (side-onshore, described as as safe as the bay) and others. Schools offer guided day trips.

Bucht von Paracas ("The Point"): Der Hauptspot, etwa 5 Autominuten vom Ort.
