Chicama is the wave in the fishing town of Puerto Malabrigo – also called Puerto Chicama – about 70 km north of Trujillo in Peru's La Libertad region. A headland catches the south and south-west swells and bends them into a long, gently curving bay, where a left-hand point wave peels over sand for hundreds of metres, and on the rare big days for more than 2 km, from the top of the cape to the pier. NASA has called the waves here "legendary", and Chicama was the first wave in the world to be protected under Peru's Ley de Rompientes (Breakers Law).
Chicama is about duration and flow, not about barrels or power. The swell is notoriously inconsistent, the water is cold because of the Humboldt Current, fog is common in the cooler months, and the afternoon wind often blows the wave out. For wind sports, the strong, consistently offshore wind is the opposite of what you want. This guide is honest about it: Chicama is one of the world's great surf destinations and not much else in the MyWaterSessions sense.
How the spot works
The wave: A left-hand point break over mostly compact sand. Locals have named the sections differently over time; commonly cited from the top down are Malpaso / El Cabo (the cape), El Point, Las Dos Tetas, El Hotel, El Hombre and El Malecón near the pier.
El Cabo / Malpaso: The section most exposed to swell, working almost every day – but also most exposed to strong wind. Surfable at all stages of the tide.
El Point: In front of the rocks, with a compact sandy bottom; can run for more than 1 km. At low tide it can offer good barrels, at high tide wide, manoeuvrable walls. Considered the best-known part of the wave.
Linking sections: Riding all the way to the pier (around 2.2 km) on one wave needs a swell above about 6 ft (Hawaiian scale), which is rare. The bigger the waves, the better the wave generally gets; the main point holds at least 10 ft Hawaiian.
Getting back up: Walk back up the point rather than paddling against the current – local surfers do this universally. Surf resorts run motorised inflatable boats to bring guests back to the top; a cab ride to the starting point (La Isla) is also possible.

Sports line
Surf ✅ – One of the world's great waves – the longest left, legally protected.
SUP ⚠️ – A tourism site says paddling is permitted at Puerto Chicama; given the currents, cold water and surf culture, only for experienced surf SUP riders who respect the surfers' priority.
Windsurf ⚠️ – The same tourism site says windsurfing is permitted, but no windsurf spot information, rental or school could be verified; the prevailing wind is offshore.
Kitesurf 🚫 – No kite information verified; the consistently offshore wind makes the point unsuitable and risky for kiting.
Wingfoil 🚫 – No information verified; offshore wind.
Wakeboard 🚫 – No cable park or towing operation.
Courses and local schools
Accommodation with surf services: Chicama Surf Resort (lodging above the wave, zodiac boat in the line-up for guests), Chicama Surf House, Delfines de Chicama and Chicama Boutique Hotel.
Surf schools and board rental: Rentals exist, but a guide advises bringing your own wetsuit; specific surf schools not verified.
Wind sports: No schools verified.
On-site facilities and logistics
Getting there: Fly from Lima to Trujillo or take an overnight bus (about 8 hours, e.g. Cruz del Sur or Oltursa); from Trujillo it is about an hour by car.
Cash: One visitor reports no ATM in town and cash-only payment – bring enough Peruvian soles (current situation not verified).
Town: Very small; most hotels sit on the cliffs above the wave. The tourist boardwalk (malecón) of about 740 m has craft stalls, food stands, showers, changing rooms and toilets.

Pacasmayo – a fast left point with long walls, within about an hour north.
Poemape – known as a heavier left with more power, also within about an hour north.
Rainy or no-wind days
No-wind days are the best days for surfing here.
Trujillo and the surrounding archaeological sites (not covered in detail here).
Local seafood in Puerto Malabrigo, e.g. ceviche.
Sport fishing near the pier.
Good to know (safety)
Currents: Strong current runs down the point – walk back instead of paddling against it.
Rocks and urchins: A few rocky areas appear at low tide, with sea urchins.
Fishing boats: Boat traffic near the pier.
Cold water and fog: 15–20 °C water, frequent fog; hypothermia risk on long sessions.
Wind: The consistently offshore wind makes drifting out to sea the main risk for any wind sport.
Emergency: Numbers not verified – ask your accommodation.
Protection: The wave is protected under Law 27280; protection of breakers is the responsibility of the Peruvian Navy's Directorate of Harbours and Coast Guard (DICAPI).
Honest limitations
The swell is notoriously inconsistent; days above head-high are rare, and waves under about 4 ft on the point tend to be weak and slow. Wave heights at the point are roughly half of what offshore swell charts show.
Not a barrel or power wave most of the time.
Cold water and fog for a large part of the year.
Not a beginner destination.
Essentially a surf-only spot: wind sports are not established, and the wind is offshore.
Very small town with limited services (cash).
Short advice per sport
Surf: Come between May and October with a long-period south swell; surf mid-morning after the fog lifts; walk back up the point.
SUP: Only as an experienced surf SUP rider; respect the surfers.
Windsurf, kitesurf, wingfoil: Not recommended here – offshore wind and no verified infrastructure.
Wakeboard: Not possible.

Wingfoil 🚫 – Keine Informationen verifiziert; ablandiger Wind.
