At a glance

A turquoise, shallow saltwater lagoon about 90–100 km north of Cape Town, part of West Coast National Park and a Ramsar wetland. No river flows into it – the lagoon is open only to the sea and just about 6 m deep at its deepest point. In southerly wind it offers vast stretches of flat water – one of South Africa's best freeride, speed and learning spots, and the relaxed alternative when Bloubergstrand is too wild.

Wind & season

• Main season: November to March
• Prevailing wind: south to south-east, typically 15–30 kn – usually a little less violent than in Cape Town
• Daily pattern: the wind often fills in around midday
• Sail/kite sizes (guide, approx. 75–90 kg): windsurf 5.0–7.0 m², kite 7–12 m²

Water & clothing

The shallow lagoon water warms up much more than the open Atlantic. In summer a 3/2 mm suit is usually enough, though it can still feel fresh in the wind.

Spots in detail

• Langebaan Main Beach / Shark Bay (Zone A): northern part near Langebaan town. Schools and kiters concentrate here.
• Zone B (near Churchhaven): sailing boats and windsurfers only, no power boats, no fishing.
• Kraalbaai: very photogenic bay with houseboats on the western side of the lagoon, only accessible through the national park.

Hazards & currents

Current indicator: 🟢 Green – 🟡 Yellow in the channels at the turn of the tide

• Tidal currents in the channels, especially towards the lagoon mouth
• Very shallow areas and sandbanks at low tide: fin and foil strikes
• Oyster beds and shell debris on the bottom – wear booties
• Power boat traffic in Zone A
• Lots of students on good wind days: keep your distance

Tides

Langebaan is a true tidal lagoon. At low tide, large areas become very shallow – standing depth for beginners, but a hazard for foils and long fins. At the turn of the tide, currents in the channels can pick up noticeably.

Rules & regulations

The lagoon is a marine protected area managed by SANParks and divided into three zones. This zoning is binding:

• Zone A (north, near town): multi-purpose zone for most water sports including kitesurfing; power boats and fishing permitted
• Zone B (middle, near Churchhaven): sailing boats and windsurfing only; no power boats, no fishing – kitesurfing not permitted here
• Zone C (south, near Geelbek): sanctuary zone, no access
• Access through the national park requires a daily conservation fee and gate registration

Several kite and windsurf schools with rental in Langebaan town, accommodation, restaurants and supermarkets.

About 1.5 hours by car from Cape Town via the R27. A rental car is required.
