Tiree windsurf & kitesurf spot

Tiree, the westernmost island of the Inner Hebrides, about four hours by ferry from Oban on the west coast of Scotland, is known as one of the windiest places in the UK and probably the most famous sailing spot in the country. The island is small – you can drive end to end in about 20 minutes – yet it is ringed by beaches facing every direction, so in almost any wind there is a spot that works: waves on the west and south coasts, flat water in the bays and on Loch Bhasapol.

It is also the home of the Tiree Wave Classic, founded in 1986 and described as the longest-running wavesailing event in the world. In 2026 the event runs from 10 to 16 October – its 42nd edition – as a 4-star World Wave Tour ranking event listed on the PWA World Tour calendar, and as round 6 of the British BWA tour. The honest flip side of all this: Tiree is remote and expensive to reach, the Atlantic water is cold, the best wave spots involve rocks, reefs and long walks over the dunes, the weather can be brutal – and even the Wave Classic has seen whole days with no wind at all.

How the spot works

One island, many beaches: Because the coastline faces every direction, the rule on Tiree is to pick the beach that suits the day's wind and swell. In a typical south-westerly blow, for example, you get down-the-line sailing at Balevullin, port cross-onshore at The Maze, starboard cross-onshore at Crossapol and flat water at Gott Bay.

SpotFacesCharacter
Gott BaySE–SW (classic C-shaped bay)Longest beach and largest standing area of the island (about 400 × 1,000 m); favourite beginner, freestyle and freeride venue; gentle waves possible in the eastern corner; best wind N/NE at the north end; ferry arrives here
CrossapolSBase of the Tiree Wave Classic and of Wild Diamond's beach activities
BalephuilS/SWAtlantic swell plus prevailing westerlies = "an explosive cocktail"; used as a Wave Classic venue when the wind turns
The MazeWOpen to all Atlantic swell directions, a favourite Wave Classic venue; huge dunes framed by rocks; tiring walk in; dunes spoil offshore winds towards high tide; left-hander to the south, right-hander to the north; flat water at Loch Mòr just over the dunes; regarded as the best-quality surf spot on the island
BalevullinNWThe surf hub of the island (Blackhouse Watersports); beach break, all-level wave in lighter summer swells
The GreenNNWSmall crescent bay, works in most wind directions, best in westerlies; farmer's permission needed to drive down the track
BalephetrishNProtected by reefs – usually a beginner-friendly flat-water spot; prolonged northerlies generate windswell
Double TroubleOff Balephetrish (N)Inner and outer reef, best in S–SW wind – experts only
Loch BhasapolInland lochLarge shallow, sandy-bottomed area, ideal for learning; Wild Diamond's windsurf base. The loch is private – per an older source a minimal launch fee is payable to the Tiree Windsurfing Club, usually handled by Wild Diamond

Tides: Tiree is on the open Atlantic with tides; ranges were not verified – they affect several spots (e.g. dunes blocking offshore wind at The Maze towards high tide).

Coordinates: The supplied coordinates (-21.63000, 145.10698) point to Queensland, Australia – not to Tiree – and were not used. Tiree lies at roughly 56.5° N, 6.9° W (approximate island position, not a launch site).

Wind & directions

The prevailing winds in Scotland come from the west and south-west, with the strongest winds typically in the winter months. One windsurf guide sums up Tiree's ideal wind as "all".
