Pozo Izquierdo, Gran Canaria (Spain) — the "Home of the Wind" and the wave-sailing mecca of Europe. Pozo Izquierdo sits on the exposed southeast coast of Gran Canaria, in the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, on a stretch of beach the locals call "El Arenal." It's not a holiday spot in the gentle sense — it's one of the windiest places on earth and the most storied high-wind wave venue in the sport, nicknamed the "Home of the Wind." For four decades it has hosted the sport's elite and crowned legends; today it stages the Gran Canaria Gloria Windsurf World Cup, a five-star PWA World Wave Tour event run by windsurfing legend Björn Dunkerbeck, drawing 120+ of the world's best riders each summer. If Brouwersdam is where Europe learns, Pozo is where it goes to prove itself.

The wind

The engine here is the northeast trade wind (the Alisio), accelerated and funnelled along the coast into something ferocious and remarkably consistent. It arrives side-onshore from the left and, at its peak, is genuinely extreme — riders routinely rig 2.8 to 4.2 m sails in high summer, sizes that would be tiny almost anywhere else, which tells you everything about the raw power on offer. The trades blow near-daily through the summer months (roughly April onward), strongest and most reliable in July and August. Through the rest of the year the trade wind still blows, usually a touch lighter (4.2–5.3 m sails), but often accompanied by bigger ground swell.

Conditions & levels

Pozo is a powered-up wave and bump-and-jump spot, not a flatwater cruise. The wind blows onshore/side-onshore into waves that are generally at least a metre and can reach three metres, so the classic Pozo session is about launching huge jumps (forward loops, backloops) and riding down the line in strong, gusty wind. The shore break is powerful and the bottom at the harder nearby breaks is volcanic rock, so getting in and out is part of the challenge. This is expert-oriented terrain: it rewards strong water skills, a confident high-wind repertoire and respect for the conditions far more than it forgives mistakes. Winter's bigger ground swells make the season epic for wave-hungry riders chasing size rather than pure wind. In short: come here to progress your wave and jumping game in serious wind — not to take your first steps.

On the beach — infrastructure & local centres

Despite its hardcore reputation, Pozo is well set up, because the whole windsurf world passes through it. Pro centres sit right on the beach — the established Pozowinds Pro Center offers daily lessons and a wide range of current rental gear, from wave and freestyle kit through freeride, slalom and foil, so you can arrive without your own quiver. The village is geared to windsurfers, with the usual mix of accommodation, food and the buzz of an international scene in season. During the World Cup the beach becomes the global epicentre of wave sailing, with the full spectator and event circus — a spectacle worth timing a trip around even if you're only there to watch.

Best season

The windiest, most reliable period is high summer (roughly June–September, peaking July–August), which is also when the World Cup is staged — this is the time for maximum wind and the smallest sails. The rest of the year still sees trade wind, generally a little lighter, but with bigger ground swell that makes autumn and winter the pick for riders chasing wave size over pure power. The Canaries are mild year-round, so water stays comfortable (roughly 19–23 °C) and a shorty or light wetsuit is plenty in most seasons.

Good to know (safety & respect)

Treat Pozo with the seriousness its reputation demands. The wind is among the strongest and gustiest anywhere, the waves are real, the shore break is powerful, and volcanic rock at the harder breaks punishes a mistimed entry or exit — this is not a beginner venue, and even competent riders should build up carefully and rig conservatively on the biggest days. Match your (small) sail to the day, know your limits in strong side-onshore wind and shore break, and mind the crowds and event traffic during the World Cup, when the water and beach are at their busiest. Come experienced, come prepared, and let the "Home of the Wind" live up to its name on your terms rather than its own.

Pozo Izquierdo, Gran Canaria (España) — la "Casa del Viento" y la meca del windsurf de olas en Europa. Pozo Izquierdo se encuentra en la expuesta costa sureste de Gran Canaria, en el municipio de Santa Lucía de Tirajana, en un tramo de playa que los lugareños llaman "El Arenal". No es un destino de vacaciones en el sentido apacible del término — es uno de los lugares más ventosos de la Tierra y el escenario de olas con viento fuerte más legendario del deporte, apodado la "Casa del Viento". El viento

Condiciones & niveles

Pozo es un spot de olas y de bump-and-jump con mucha potencia, no un paseo por aguas planas. El viento sopla onshore/side-onshore contra olas que suelen ser de al menos un metro y pueden alcanzar los tres metros, de modo que la sesión clásica de Pozo consiste en lanzar saltos enormes (forward loops, backloops) y surfear las olas con viento fuerte y racheado. El shore break es potente y el fondo en los picos más duros de los alrededores es de roca volcánica, así que entrar y salir del agua forma parte del reto. Es un terreno orientado a expertos: recompensa unas buenas habilidades en el agua, un repertorio sólido de viento fuerte y el respeto por las condiciones mucho más de lo que perdona los errores. El mayor mar de fondo del invierno convierte la temporada en algo épico para los riders sedientos de tamaño más que de puro viento. En resumen: ven aquí a mejorar tu nivel de olas y de saltos con viento serio, no a dar tus primeros pasos.

En la playa — infraestructura & centros locales

A pesar de su reputación exigente, Pozo está bien equipado, porque por aquí pasa todo el mundo del windsurf. Los centros profesionales están justo en la playa — el consolidado Pozowinds Pro Center ofrece clases diarias y una amplia gama de material de alquiler actual, desde equipo de olas y freestyle hasta freeride, slalom y foil, así que puedes llegar sin tu propio quiver. El pueblo está orientado a los windsurfistas, con la habitual mezcla de alojamiento, restauración y el bullicio de un ambiente internacional en temporada. Durante la World Cup la playa se convierte en el epicentro mundial del windsurf de olas, con todo el despliegue de público y de evento — un espectáculo que merece la pena para planificar un viaje a su alrededor, aunque solo vayas a mirar.

Mejor temporada

El periodo más ventoso y fiable es el pleno verano (aproximadamente de junio a septiembre, con su punto álgido en julio–agosto), que es también cuando se celebra la World Cup — es la época del máximo viento y de las velas más pequeñas. El resto del año sigue habiendo alisio, por lo general algo más flojo, pero con mayor mar de fondo que hace del otoño y el invierno la elección para quienes buscan tamaño de ola más que potencia pura. Canarias es templada todo el año, así que el agua se mantiene agradable (en torno a 19–23 °C) y un shorty o un neopreno ligero es más que suficiente en la mayoría de las temporadas.

Trata Pozo con la seriedad que exige su reputación. El viento es de los más fuertes y racheados que existen, las olas son de verdad, el shore break es potente y la roca volcánica de los picos más duros castiga una entrada o salida mal calculada — no es un spot para principiantes, e incluso los riders competentes deberían ir progresando con cuidado y armar de forma conservadora los días más grandes. Ajusta tu vela (pequeña) a las condiciones del día, conoce tus límites con el viento fuerte side-onshore y el shore break, y ten cuidado con la aglomeración y el tráfico del evento durante la World Cup, cuando el agua y la playa están en su momento de mayor afluencia. Ven con experiencia, ven preparado, y deja que la "Casa del Viento" esté a la altura de su nombre en tus términos y no en los suyos.
