Ponte Caffaro, Lake Idro (Italy) — the kite spot at the northern tip between Lake Garda and Lake Iseo

Ponte Caffaro sits at the very northern end of Lake Idro (Lago d'Idro), in the province of Brescia, Lombardy, right on the border with Trentino. The lake itself lies tucked between Lake Garda and Lake Iseo, surrounded by the foothills of the Italian Dolomites. What used to be an insider tip for a select few has, over the past years, developed into a serious, noticeably cheaper alternative to the crowded Lake Garda.

Unlike Lake Garda, where launch spots are often narrow and rocky, Ponte Caffaro offers a large, open meadow right by the water — plenty of room to rig up in peace, without fighting over every square meter. Combined with a reliable thermal wind, this is exactly what makes the place the best-known kite spot on the lake.

Address to navigate to: Via Quadri I, Località Porto Ponte Caffaro (Fraz. Bagolino, Province of Brescia) — home to the kitebeach, club grounds, and RV/motorhome parking.

How the spot works

Two things define what you get in Ponte Caffaro:

The lake's orientation. Lake Idro runs roughly north–south. Ponte Caffaro sits at the north end — and the daily thermal wind (the "Ora") blows from south to north. That means: at the Ponte Caffaro launch, the wind is onshore. The opposite shore already belongs to Trentino — kiting there is strictly forbidden, partly because the onshore wind would carry you straight there if you can't hold your ground upwind.

The meadow as launch area. Instead of a tunnel launch and a narrow strip of gravel like elsewhere on the lake, Ponte Caffaro offers a generous grass area for rigging and storing gear. That makes getting started more relaxed — but it doesn't change the fact that the wind and course conditions themselves remain demanding.

The wind

Wind type: Thermal (the "Ora"), a daily, reliable pattern similar to nearby Lake Garda
Onset: Usually from early afternoon, once the sun has warmed the lake enough
Wind direction: South, onshore into the kite area
Strength: Typically around 15 knots on average, more on strong days
Best travel season: Spring and autumn are considered the most reliable

Direction Character Rating
S Onshore into the kite area ⭐ The Ora — the classic, dominant wind direction at this spot
Trentino side (opposite shore) — 🚫 Kiting strictly forbidden here

Wind strength & gear (rough guide, kite-specific)

Wind Character
~10–15 kn Standard conditions, rideable through much of the day
15+ kn Noticeably more power on strong days, more demanding

Since the wind is onshore and you need to be able to hold your upwind angle reliably to avoid drifting toward the forbidden Trentino side, a dependable, well-controllable setup matters more here than at a pure freestyle spot.

Conditions & levels

Level What to expect
🟢 Beginner Not suitable without a course — club rules require confident upwind riding before going out alone
🟡 Improver Possible, but only with a solid foundation; a course with the local club is the usual way in
🟢 Advanced Core target group of this spot — large meadow, reliable thermal wind, well-organized setup
🟡 Pro Solid, but not a spot for high-end freestyle or big waves — Lake Idro remains an inland lake

Disciplines: Kite ✅ · Wingfoil ⚠️ (better suited at other points on the lake, see alternatives) · Windsurf ⚠️ (club structure exists, but kiting dominates the main spot) · SUP ✅ (rental on site)

Lessons & the local club

A local kitesurf school runs its base right on the north shore, with club grounds at the kitebeach: a large lawn for rigging kites, a beach marshall who helps launch/land kites, and direct water access. On site you'll also find WiFi and rental of bikes, SUPs, and canoes for anyone wanting to explore the lake beyond wind sports too.

Important: access to the kitebeach is regulated.

Kiting is only allowed at the designated kitebeach
Access requires membership in the local kite club (approx. €25/year)
Day passes are available for approx. €5/day
Prerequisite: you must be able to hold your ground upwind reliably — otherwise a course is required first

On site — facilities & logistics

Launch area: Large meadow right at the kitebeach, enough room for several kiters at once
Parking: Space also available for motorhomes/RVs
Food: Restaurant and toilets near the spot
Water level: Fluctuates with the lake level — this can noticeably affect available rigging space depending on season and rainfall
Bike path: Since 2025, a new bike path connects Ponte Caffaro to Anfo along the shore

Best season

Period Character
Spring (Apr–Jun) ⭐ Most reliable thermal wind, pleasant climate
Summer Wind is present, but this is peak tourist season with more activity around the lake
Autumn (Sep–Oct) ⭐ Second strong stretch of the season, often stable Ora days
Winter Little to no wind, off-season

Nearby alternatives

Anfo (public park, a few kilometers south) — a good launch spot for wingfoilers with their own gear (sideshore from the right); in northerly wind/bad weather, the main beach in Anfo serves as a backup spot (sideshore from the left) with steeper, higher waves
Vantone (a district of Idro, across from Anfo, < 1 km away) — narrow, public beaches with comparable wind, access possibly via the "Sportcamping Rio Vantone" campsite
Baitoni Bay — a windsurf club for locals with gear storage, but no rental or lessons
Sant'Antonio (northern district of Anfo) — limited beach space, many trees, mostly private property behind the public shoreline
Lake Garda (approx. 30–40 minutes by car) — significantly more infrastructure, but also significantly busier and pricier

Good to know (safety first)

Onshore wind. The thermal wind blows directly onshore into the kite area — anyone who can't hold their upwind angle reliably will drift toward the opposite shore, which is off-limits to kiters in Trentino. This is exactly why the local club requires this skill as a prerequisite.
Protected biotope. The adjacent biotope must not be entered by kite or paddled into — the onshore wind makes extra caution necessary here.
Offshore rocks. These accelerate the wind further; anyone approaching this area should expect stronger gusts.
Club membership required. Without membership or a day pass, access to the kitebeach isn't provided for — this isn't a courtesy rule, it's a fixed club structure.
Emergency number in Italy: 112

Honest limitations

Not a spot for beginners. Anyone who can't yet hold their upwind angle confidently needs a course first before thinking about riding independently.
Regulated access. Unlike many other spots, access isn't simply free — club membership or a day pass is mandatory.
Inland lake, not the ocean. If you're after big waves or ocean feel, this isn't the place — Lake Idro remains a mountain lake with correspondingly limited swell.
Windsurfing and wing are secondary. The main spot is designed for kiting; windsurfers and wingers will find better conditions at the surrounding points (Anfo, Baitoni).

The short advice

First session at the lake: Register with the local club beforehand and clarify whether a day pass is enough or a course is required — without confident upwind riding, nothing happens here.
Advanced riders: Spring or autumn, early afternoon, once the Ora has kicked in — that's when the wind is most reliable.
Wingfoilers: Head straight to Anfo instead of Ponte Caffaro — access is more straightforward there.
With family: The meadow at the kitebeach offers room to watch, the nearby restaurant covers food — but the actual water sport here is clearly reserved for kiters with club membership.
