Namotu / Tavarua windsurf & kitesurf spot

Namotu and Tavarua are two small islands in the southern Mamanuca group, off the west coast of Viti Levu, Fiji's largest island. Tavarua is a 29-acre, heart-shaped island about 45 minutes by boat from Nadi; Namotu is a tiny, sand-covered coral island of about five to six acres, roughly 3.5 miles off Viti Levu. Around them lies one of the most celebrated reef systems on earth: Cloudbreak, one of the best left-hand barrels on the planet; Restaurants directly in front of Tavarua's restaurant; and, around Namotu, Namotu Lefts, Swimming Pools and Wilkes Pass. When the south-east trade wind blows side-shore, Namotu Left is described as being as legendary in the windsurf and kitesurf world as Cloudbreak is in surfing.

This is reef-pass country in the open Pacific. Every break is reached by boat, most break over shallow coral, and the best-known waves – Cloudbreak, Restaurants and Wilkes Pass – are for experienced surfers. Both islands are small, all-inclusive resorts with limited guest numbers. Since a 2010 government decree, Fiji's surf breaks, including Cloudbreak and Restaurants, have been open to anyone who can get there by boat, which also means busier line-ups than in the old exclusive days.

Important data note: the country and coordinates supplied with this guide are wrong. Namotu and Tavarua are in Fiji, not New Zealand, and the coordinates (-3.28287, 154.71490) point to a location near Papua New Guinea, far from Fiji. Exact coordinates for the islands: not verified in this research.
