Isla Blanca / Cancún windsurf & kitesurf spot

Isla Blanca is the narrow sand peninsula north of Cancún, between the Caribbean Sea and the huge, shallow Chacmuchuch lagoon, about 25 minutes north of Cancún city and roughly 50 minutes from Cancún airport. Behind the dunes lies a saltwater lagoon so big you can't see the other side – you can kite out for 2 km, fall, and stand up in waist-deep water. It is regularly described as one of the easiest and most gentle kite spots in the world, and as the only spot on Mexico's Caribbean coast that works in all wind directions.

Isla Blanca is not a resort beach. There is almost no infrastructure, very little shade, a dirt and cobbled access road, and in light offshore wind you may face a long walk back through the water. The sea side of the peninsula is choppy with shallow reef sections. But for learning, freestyle and wingfoiling on flat, warm water, far from Cancún's crowds and with flamingos and rays for company, Isla Blanca is hard to beat.

How the spot works

• The lagoon (Chacmuchuch): Flat and shallow almost everywhere; the water only gets deep at the north tip of the lagoon and far out. Several kilometres of standing depth.
• Wind from any direction: All directions are kiteable because offshore wind is not a problem in such shallow water. North-west, north and north-east come in clean and strong, and the water level is a few inches higher. East and south-east are better kited at the "Dos Sueños" site, where the wind comes across from the ocean over the lagoon with less turbulence.
• North winds ("nortes"): Thanks to its position, north winds are onshore at Isla Blanca when they are offshore in the rest of the Riviera Maya – making it the go-to spot on norte days.
• Water surface: Tiny wavelets in west, north and north-east wind; perfectly glassy flat water in east and south-east wind.
• Lessons: The few mobile kite schools usually take students further from shore by jet ski (still waist-deep water), away from experienced riders.
• Sea side: Choppy and not great for kiting, unless you want to chase reef waves – careful, some reef sections are very shallow.

Wind strength and gear

Average wind speeds of 15–25 kn, most reliable from November to May. Mornings are often best in the main months, with wind at least five days a week (per a local spot report).

Water: never below about 26 °C according to a local school; boardshorts and rash vest, a shorty during the first cold fronts from December to February.

• Getting there by car: Take Bonampak Avenue north, cross López Portillo Avenue and continue to the Playa Mujeres entrance roundabout; follow the road around Playa Mujeres to a second roundabout, where the road to Isla Blanca begins; it turns into a cobbled street – after the "Pirata Morgan" entrance, the lagoon entrance is on the left.
• Public transport: Red-and-white vans leave from the crossing of Tulum Avenue and López Portillo Avenue (in front of the Canto pharmacy).
• Entrance fee: A 2019 report mentions a daily fee of 50 pesos per vehicle (current fee not verified).
• Facilities: Very limited – a visitor report says there are no beach facilities and little natural shade; parking is on open sand, so watch the tide. Schools and lodges have their own facilities.

• El Cuyo – quiet fishing village with kite houses, about 3 hours from Cancún.

Rainy or no-wind days

• Fly fishing for bonefish, permit and tarpon – the lagoon is one of Mexico's best places for it
• Bird watching: herons, flamingos and other sea birds
• A long walk on the Caribbean beach along the dunes
• Isla Mujeres, reachable by ferry from the Punta Sam area near the start of the road

Good to know (safety)

• Light offshore wind: It can die when you are far out – you then walk back through the water or pay for a jet-ski recovery (a 2023 source gives from USD 25).
• Rays: There are a few rays; their mating season is in spring – shuffle your feet when walking.
• Crocodiles: A local lodge mentions "maybe some crocs" but says it has never seen any.
• Shallow reef on the sea side: Take care if you go for waves.

Isla Blanca ist die schmale Sandhalbinsel nördlich von Cancún, zwischen der Karibik und der riesigen, flachen Lagune Chacmuchuch, etwa 25 Minuten nördlich der Stadt Cancún und rund 50 Minuten vom Flughafen entfernt. Hinter den Dünen liegt eine Salzwasserlagune, so groß, dass man das andere Ufer nicht sieht – man kann 2 km hinauskiten, stürzen und steht hüfttief im Wasser. Sie wird regelmäßig als einer der einfachsten und sanftesten Kitespots der Welt beschrieben und als einziger Spot an Mexikos Karibikküste, der bei allen Windrichtungen funktioniert.

Isla Blanca ist kein Resortstrand. Es gibt fast keine Infrastruktur, sehr wenig Schatten, eine Zufahrt über Schotter- und Pflasterstraße, und bei schwachem ablandigem Wind kann ein langer Rückweg durchs Wasser anstehen. Die Meerseite der Halbinsel ist kabbelig und hat flache Riffabschnitte. Aber zum Lernen, für Freestyle und Wingfoilen auf flachem, warmem Wasser, fernab vom Trubel Cancúns und in Gesellschaft von Flamingos und Rochen, ist Isla Blanca kaum zu schlagen.

So funktioniert der Spot

• Die Lagune (Chacmuchuch): Fast überall flach und seicht; tief wird es nur an der Nordspitze der Lagune und weit draußen. Mehrere Kilometer mit Stehtiefe.
• Wind aus jeder Richtung: Alle Richtungen sind kitebar, weil ablandiger Wind in so flachem Wasser kein Problem ist. Nordwest, Nord und Nordost kommen sauber und kräftig, und der Wasserstand liegt ein paar Zentimeter höher. Ost und Südost fährt man besser am Spot "Dos Sueños", wo der Wind vom Meer über die Lagune mit weniger Turbulenzen kommt.
• Nordwinde ("Nortes"): Dank der Lage sind Nordwinde in Isla Blanca auflandig, wenn sie im Rest der Riviera Maya ablandig sind – damit ist es an Norte-Tagen der Spot der Wahl.
• Wasseroberfläche: Kleine Wellchen bei West-, Nord- und Nordostwind; spiegelglattes Wasser bei Ost- und Südostwind.
• Unterricht: Die wenigen mobilen Kiteschulen bringen Schüler meist per Jetski weiter vom Ufer weg (das Wasser ist dort immer noch hüfttief), abseits der erfahrenen Fahrer.
• Meerseite: Kabbelig und kaum zum Kiten geeignet, außer man sucht Riffwellen – Vorsicht, manche Riffabschnitte sind sehr flach.

Windstärke und Material

Durchschnittlich 15–25 kn, am zuverlässigsten von November bis Mai. In den Hauptmonaten sind laut einem lokalen Spotbericht die Vormittage oft am besten, mit Wind an mindestens fünf Tagen pro Woche.

Wasser: laut einer lokalen Schule nie unter etwa 26 °C; Boardshorts und Lycra, bei den ersten Kaltfronten von Dezember bis Februar ein Shorty.

• Anreise mit dem Auto: Die Avenida Bonampak nach Norden nehmen, die Avenida López Portillo kreuzen und bis zum Kreisverkehr an der Einfahrt nach Playa Mujeres fahren; um Playa Mujeres herum bis zu einem zweiten Kreisverkehr, an dem die Straße nach Isla Blanca beginnt; sie wird zur Pflasterstraße – nach der Einfahrt zu "Pirata Morgan" liegt die Einfahrt zur Lagune links.

Isla Blanca es la estrecha península de arena al norte de Cancún, entre el mar Caribe y la enorme y poco profunda laguna Chacmuchuch, a unos 25 minutos al norte de la ciudad de Cancún y a unos 50 minutos del aeropuerto. Detrás de las dunas se extiende una laguna de agua salada tan grande que no se ve la otra orilla: puedes navegar 2 km mar adentro, caerte y ponerte de pie con el agua a la cintura. Se describe a menudo como uno de los spots de kite más fáciles y amables del mundo, y como el único spot de la costa caribeña de México que funciona con todas las direcciones de viento.

Isla Blanca no es una playa de resort. Casi no hay infraestructura, hay muy poca sombra, el acceso es por un camino de terracería y empedrado, y con viento offshore suave puedes terminar caminando un buen trecho de vuelta por el agua. El lado del mar de la península es picado y tiene secciones de arrecife poco profundas. Pero para aprender, hacer freestyle y wingfoil en agua plana y cálida, lejos de las multitudes de Cancún y en compañía de flamencos y rayas, Isla Blanca es difícil de superar.

Cómo funciona el spot

• La laguna (Chacmuchuch): Plana y poco profunda casi en todas partes; solo se vuelve profunda en la punta norte de la laguna y lejos de la orilla. Varios kilómetros donde se hace pie.
• Viento de cualquier dirección: Todas las direcciones son navegables porque el viento offshore no es un problema en aguas tan bajas. El noroeste, el norte y el noreste entran limpios y fuertes, y el nivel del agua sube unos centímetros. El este y el sureste se navegan mejor en el sitio "Dos Sueños", donde el viento cruza del mar a la laguna con menos turbulencia.
• Nortes: Por su ubicación, los vientos del norte son onshore en Isla Blanca cuando son offshore en el resto de la Riviera Maya, lo que lo convierte en el spot de referencia los días de norte.
• Superficie del agua: Pequeñas olitas con viento del oeste, norte y noreste; agua totalmente plana y lisa con viento del este y sureste.
• Clases: Las pocas escuelas móviles de kite suelen llevar a los alumnos más lejos de la orilla en jet ski (el agua sigue llegando a la cintura), lejos de los riders con experiencia.
• Lado del mar: Picado y poco adecuado para kite, salvo que quieras buscar olas de arrecife; cuidado, hay secciones donde el arrecife es muy poco profundo.

Viento y dirección

Fuerza del viento y equipo

Velocidad media del viento de 15 a 25 nudos, más fiable de noviembre a mayo. En los meses principales, las mañanas suelen ser lo mejor, con viento al menos cinco días por semana (según un reporte local del spot).

Agua: nunca por debajo de unos 26 °C según una escuela local; short de baño y licra, un shorty durante los primeros frentes fríos de diciembre a febrero.

• Kitesurf ✅ – El deporte principal: una de las grandes lagunas del mundo para aprender y hacer freestyle en agua plana.
