Hel / Zatoka Pucka windsurf & kitesurf spot

The Hel Peninsula is a 34–35 km long, narrow spit between the open Baltic Sea and the Bay of Puck (Zatoka Pucka), the shallow western arm of the Bay of Gdańsk. It is by far the most popular kitesurf area in Poland, and its villages – Chałupy, Kuźnica, Jastarnia, Jurata and Hel – line up along the peninsula. Chałupy is regarded as the birthplace of Polish kitesurfing and the capital of the scene; on the bay side, the water stays shallow and flat for several hundred metres, sometimes kilometres – armpit-deep over a sandy bottom.

That makes Puck Bay one of the best places in Europe to learn and progress in kitesurfing and windsurfing. Because the peninsula is so narrow, it works in all wind directions: flat water on the bay side, chop and waves on the Baltic side. The honest flip side: in summer the spots are crowded with schools and holidaymakers; the bay is a Natura 2000 area with specific restrictions (e.g. around the Rybitwia Mielizna sandbank); the prevailing wind on rideable days is moderate rather than strong; and the Baltic side brings waves and currents. Locals ride all year – even in sub-zero temperatures – and the frozen bay is used for ice kiting in hard winters.

How the spot works

Two sides:

Main spots along the peninsula: Chałupy (numbered campsites such as Chałupy 3 and Chałupy 6), Kuźnica (narrowest part of the spit), Jastarnia (slightly deeper but still beginner-friendly), Jurata, and Hel at the tip.

Rules (Natura 2000): The inner Puck Bay lies within the Natura 2000 areas and the coastal landscape park; regulations enforced by the Maritime Office include a ban on kitesurf events and schools on the Rybitwia Mielizna sandbank, a keep-out distance of 3 cables from Rybitwia Mielizna, and a total ban on jet skis plus a 5 kn speed limit for motorboats in the whole inner Puck Bay (per a local news article; current details not verified). Wind-powered craft are generally not restricted except at a few specific places such as the mouths of the Płutnica and Reda rivers.

Coordinates: The supplied coordinates (54.60587, 18.80058) lie at Hel, the tip of the peninsula. The main kite spots (Chałupy, Kuźnica, Jastarnia) lie further west along the spit.

No tides: No significant tidal changes (Baltic).

Wind & directions

The peninsula works in all wind directions – choose bay or sea side. When rideable, wind is mostly in the 7–12 kn range (per a spot database's statistics); another source quotes stable 15–25 kn for the bay in season.

Keine Gezeiten: Keine nennenswerten Gezeitenwechsel (Ostsee).

Wind & Richtungen

Półwysep Helski to wąska mierzeja o długości 34–35 km, oddzielająca otwarty Bałtyk od Zatoki Puckiej – płytkiej, zachodniej części Zatoki Gdańskiej. To zdecydowanie najpopularniejszy rejon kitesurfingu w Polsce, a wzdłuż półwyspu leżą kolejne miejscowości: Chałupy, Kuźnica, Jastarnia, Jurata i Hel.

Wiatr i kierunki
