Gnaraloo windsurf & kitesurf spot

Gnaraloo is a remote pastoral station on the southern end of the Ningaloo Reef, about 150 km north of Carnarvon – most of it on dirt road – and roughly a 14-hour drive from Perth. The coast here lies within the Nyinggulu Coastal Reserve and the Ningaloo Marine Park, part of the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area. Its fame comes from Tombstones ("Tombies"), a heavy, barrelling left-hander over shallow reef that draws surfers, kiters and windsurfers from all over the world. Windsurfers from Perth rate it, together with Esperance, as one of the two best places to sail in Western Australia.

Gnaraloo is expert terrain in every sense. The reef is razor-sharp and shallow, launching is tricky, there is essentially no mobile signal, the nearest hospital is in Carnarvon, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service cannot land here. Accommodation is limited to the station's 3 Mile Camp and Homestead, water is scarce, and fuel is not guaranteed. In return you get world-class waves, sheltered coral lagoons for the non-surfing days, and genuine wilderness.
