Blokhus, Jammerbugt (Denmark) — the wide open family beach Just south of Løkken (same Jammerbugt bay, north of Aalborg) lies Blokhus, famous for one of Northern Europe's finest beaches: a wide, roughly 100 m broad strip of delicate white sand backed by warm dunes, running from Rødhus in the south to Saltum in the north. You can drive your car onto the beach on the stretch between Rødhus and Løkken. It's first and foremost a classic family beach resort — and it also offers excellent conditions for both kite- and windsurfing. The wind Classic North Sea setup: the best wind is westerly, with low-pressure systems — strongest from autumn to spring. The beach faces the open sea, so sideshore directions are NNE and SSW. Winds typically range 15–30 knots on good days. Conditions & levels Blokhus is big, wide and open — masses of space on the sand to rig and launch, which kiters in particular appreciate. It's an open-coast beach break: you get waves and North Sea energy rather than flat water. The water is never really warm (never above about 21 °C, usually cooler), so a wetsuit is essential. It's a genuinely enjoyable spot for intermediate riders and, on the calmer days, an accessible one — but as an exposed North Sea beach it demands more respect than a sheltered fjord. Sports: Kite ✅ · Windsurf ✅ · Wave surf ✅ · SUP ✅ (calm days) On the beach — infrastructure Beach & access: enormous white-sand beach with easy access — you can drive onto the sand, which makes hauling gear effortless. Fresh fish is sold on the beach most days; dogs welcome on a leash. Town & family: Blokhus is a well-developed resort with the full holiday infrastructure (shops, eateries, holiday homes, family attractions nearby). Schools: unlike Løkken (North Shore Surf) or the fjord (Westwind), Blokhus doesn't have one single dominant beachfront school in my sources — mobile/regional operators cover the area. Verify a current local school/rental before publishing (or point riders to the nearby Løkken school). Best season Best wind and waves autumn to spring; summer is the busy family-beach season with lighter, less reliable wind. Rideable roughly March to October with the right wetsuit; the water never warms much. Good to know (safety first) Blokhus is a wonderful, easy-going family beach, but the riding is open North Sea — watch for currents, changing sandbanks and the fact that cars drive on the beach (mind bathers, kids and dogs when launching). Check the forecast and don't confuse "beautiful beach day" with "easy water".
