Blokhus windsurf & kitesurf spot

Blokhus, Jammerbugt (Denmark) — the wide-open family beach

Just south of Løkken (same Jammerbugt bay, north of Aalborg) lies Blokhus, famous for one of Northern Europe's finest beaches: a wide strip of delicate white sand, roughly 100 m broad, backed by warm dunes and running from Rødhus in the south to Saltum in the north. On the stretch between Rødhus and Løkken you can drive your car straight onto the sand. First and foremost this is a classic family beach resort — but it also happens to offer excellent conditions for both kite- and windsurfing, which gives it a relaxed, holiday character quite different from the harder-core wave spots further up the coast.

The wind

This is a classic exposed North Sea setup: the best wind is westerly, arriving with the low-pressure systems that roll through, and it's strongest from autumn to spring. Because the beach faces straight out into the open sea, the sideshore directions are NNE and SSW. On good days the wind typically ranges 15–30 knots. As on any Atlantic-facing coast, the wind is most reliable outside high summer, tied to passing fronts rather than to steady thermals.

Conditions & levels

Blokhus is big, wide and open, with masses of space on the sand to rig and launch — something kiters in particular appreciate. It's an open-coast beach break, so you get waves and genuine North Sea energy rather than flatwater. The water is never really warm (never above about 21 °C, usually cooler), so a wetsuit is essential. It's a genuinely enjoyable spot for intermediate riders and, on the calmer days, an accessible one too — but as an exposed North Sea beach it asks for more respect than a sheltered fjord. In short: come here for space and swell rather than glass, ride the calmer days if you're still building confidence, and treat the bigger days as intermediate-and-up terrain.

On the beach — infrastructure

The beach itself is the headline: an enormous white-sand strip with easy access, and the fact that you can drive onto the sand makes hauling gear effortless. Fresh fish is sold on the beach most days, and dogs are welcome on a leash. Off the sand, Blokhus is a well-developed resort with the full holiday infrastructure — shops, eateries, holiday homes and family attractions nearby. One honest gap: unlike Løkken (with North Shore Surf) or the fjord (with Westwind), Blokhus doesn't have a single dominant beachfront school in my sources — mobile and regional operators cover the area instead. It's worth verifying a current local school or rental before you go, or pointing riders to the nearby Løkken school.

Best season

Best wind and waves come autumn to spring, when the westerly lows deliver the strongest, most consistent conditions. Summer is the busy family-beach season, with lighter, less reliable wind and the biggest crowds. It's rideable roughly March to October with the right wetsuit — and, since the water never warms much, proper wetsuit protection matters right through the season.

Good to know (safety first)

Blokhus is a wonderful, easy-going family beach, but the riding is open North Sea, so treat it as such: watch for currents and changing sandbanks, and keep in mind that cars drive on the beach — mind bathers, kids and dogs when you launch. Check the forecast, match your gear and your choice of day to your level, and don't confuse a "beautiful beach day" with "easy water." The two are not the same on this coast.
